Resumo

A análise histórica sobre a erradicação da malária nos Estados Unidos da América, resgatada recentemente por Bill Gates na sua nota "When malaria was an American disease", traz à superfície um axioma fundamental que frequentemente se dilui no discurso sanitário contemporâneo: antes de ser uma patologia tropical, a malária foi um flagelo global, e o cerne do seu combate não reside estritamente no tratamento do hematozoário, mas sim na mitigação radical do seu vector. Esta distinção encerra implicações profundas na formulação de políticas públicas, na arquitectura dos sistemas de saúde e no modelo de envolvimento das comunidades na sua própria protecção.
